From PENJERDEL Executive Director, Andrew L. Warren
Sam Katz, astute businessman/politician and now filmmaker ticked off the goals and obstacles in creating a PBS film series on 19th Century Philadelphia. This film focuses not on the everyday recitation of dates and battles but rather on a period of fantastic growth and development, a defining period of wins, losses and of memorable politicians in Philadelphia. This fascinating project should reach completion before 2010. Just days earlier, PENJERDEL took a stand on behalf of thousands of our tri-state residents employed in port related occupations. Led by Board of Directors members David Mandelbaum of Ballard Spahr and Dennis Rochford of the Maritime Exchange, those assembled unanimously passed a resolution in support of the deepening of the Delaware River channel. This resolution will be sent to the governors and congressional delegations of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Jim Carll, chair of both Archer Greiner and PENJERDEL stated that in order for our tri-state region to retain its' viability and competitive edge over other East coast ports, it is imperative that our waterways and port facilities be able to accommodate, attract and retain today's large cargo vessels. PENJERDEL members were also afforded the opportunity for cutting edge information in city planning and zoning considerations through a program organized by Board members Gerry Cope of Cope/Linder Architects and Jeff Leonard of Cozen/O'Connor. Their Real Estate Committee brought Alan Greenberger, Executive Director, the Philadelphia Planning Commission, to this recent meeting. Aviation had its' day when Richard Horstmann, of Urban Engineers, introduced the Directors of Aviation for Pennsylvania and Delaware to a recent meeting of the Aviation Committee. It was fascinating to know of the auxiliary air capabilities of the airports surrounding Philadelphia International. The PENJERDEL Council, represented by Bob Gross and Bruce Katcher, demonstrated its' continuing commitment to greening and sustainability projects by participating in an environmental press conference held recently at the Philadelphia offices of Rohm & Haas.
